Governor Applauds Labor Director - July 11, 2005

Image Governor Felix P. Camacho today congratulated Department of Labor Director Maria Connelley on recent accolades she received from U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division Regional Administrator George Friday, Jr who currently is on Guam.  On July 8, 2005, Friday personally wrote to Connelley expressing his appreciation for the contributions of her office "to the overall mission of the U.S. Dept. of Labor's Wage Hour Division within the community of Guam."

"I am very proud of Mrs. Connelley's work and the Department of Labor's achievements toward the workforce mission it shares with its federal counterpart," Governor Camacho said.  "Mrs. Connelley has been a tremendous asset to the Administration and we are thankful for her commitment to the people of Guam."

Friday noted the Guam Department of Labor's efforts toward prohibiting unlawful youth employment that endangers the safety of minors under the age of 16.  Friday also thanked Connelley for her leadership that has led to an "environment of cooperation" that exists between the federal and local departments of Labor.

"Since she took on her role as Director of Labor, Mrs. Connelley has taken a proactive approach to growing Guam's skilled workforce and providing opportunities for our people to succeed in a fast-growing community," Governor Camacho said.  "This is the kind of innovative approach to progress that produces results and moves our island forward."

Mrs. Connelley also has taken on the role of Chairperson for both the annual Labor Day Picnic and the Governor's Employee Recognition Program.

Exec. Order 2005-22 Signed By Governor Camacho
Americorps LogoGovernor Felix P. Camacho signed on June 2, 2005, Executive Order No. 2005-22 establishing a commission on national and community service known as the Serve Guam Commission. Guam's AmeriCorps now will fall under the Commission's auspices and the Commission will be housed under the Department of Labor. The Order establishing the Commission is in line with Governor Camacho's direction to the Guam Department of Labor and Guam AmeriCorps to meet human, education, environmental and public safety needs through plans encouraging service and reinvigorating civic responsibility. The Order is consistent with the recommendations by the National Director of AmeriCorps for Guam to establish such a vehicle to apply for and manage national service programs. Presently, AmeriCorps is the only national service program under the Corporation for National & Community Service ("Corporation") that is made available by the local government. Governor Camacho's establishment of the commission will avail the people of Guam to other community-based programs also under the Corporation such as Senior Corps and Learn & Serve.

"This is an opportunity to support the mission of our community service organizations such as AmeriCorps to encourage good citizenship, service, and civic involvement" Governor Camacho said. "The establishment of the Commission is an important step toward promoting community involvement in our island's progress. We must also capitalize on funds that will now be made available as a result of this Commission."

In addition to receiving nearly $500,000 annually in federal funding, Guam AmeriCorps's contribution to the community may be seen in programs that promote literacy at the Guam Public Library through the Saturday & Summer Reading Programs; provide tutoring and mentorship for at-risk youth with the Department of Youth Affairs; and actively assist in agricultural and recreational activities in addition to providing public awareness about historic preservation within several government agencies.

It is anticipated that the Serve Guam Commission will more than double available funding opportunities that support qualified educational, public safety, environmental, and other human needs of the people of Guam. Interested persons are encouraged to visit the Guam AmeriCorps website at www.guamamericorps.com or at the Guam Department of Labor site at www.guamdol.net or visit the Guam AmeriCorps office on the 3rd floor of the GCIC building for grant applications and/or additional information.
