THANK A VOLUNTEER TODAY! Print E-mail
National Volunteer Week is April 23-29, 2006; a time where we thank one of our most valuable assets - our Volunteers – in all they do to improve our communities.

April 12, 2006

The Serve Guam! Commission, along with its AmeriCorps programs and the Guam Department of Labor, is continuing an annual tradition in celebrating National Volunteer Week from April 23 – 29, 2006.  This year’s theme, “Inspired by Example:  Serving Together,” aims at thanking one of America’s most valuable assets:  OUR VOLUNTEERS!

We want to give the people of Guam an opportunity to honor, recognize, and/or thank an individual, group, or an organization that has volunteered their time to improve our community in one way or another.  You may prepare a thank-you card, poster, and/or letter not to exceed the size of 9” X 13”.  All submissions will be displayed at the Agana Shopping Center starting on April 21st at 11:00 am.  The display will be up the remainder of the week until April 29th; our desire in this endeavor is to bring what fruition the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help; as well as to inspire others to serve!

National Volunteer Week was designated by Executive Order as an annual observance by President Richard Nixon in 1974.  Every President since has signed a proclamation of support announcing National Volunteer Week as the national week of recognizing volunteers.  This year, the President of the United States George W. Bush will again sign a proclamation in support of National Volunteer Week.

Locally, Governor of Guam Felix P. Camacho will join the President in proclaiming the 33rd annual National Volunteer Week.  His support can challenge and encourage the people he represents to commit to sustained and future volunteer service.  There will be a Proclamation signing on Friday, 11:00 am, April 21, 2006, at the Agana Shopping Center to kick off National Volunteer Week 2006 and to showcase the public’s response to Thank-A-Volunteer display set up; the public is invited.

Please turn in all letters, poster, and/or thank you cards on or before Wednesday, April 19th by 5PM at the Serve Guam! Office located on the 3rd floor of the GCIC Building in Hagatna.  Your participation is greatly encouraged and appreciated.  For more information, please call Lisa Hoyer at 475-9177 or Bobbie Roberto at 647-4742.
