February 1, 2007

PRESS RELEASE

{mosimage}The Guam Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) will host its first breakfast briefing of the year on Thursday, February 8, 2007.

These briefings focus on issues of importance to employers and are open to the business community.

February 8th Breakfast Briefing

Next week’s event will examine recent developments in Wage and Hour law.

A panel of experts, including representatives from the federal and local DOL, and employment law attorneys will review the recent changes in the Guam Wage & Hour law and give an update on the progress of the minimum wage increase legislation pending in Congress.  Both of these have significant impact for Guam employers.

Their discussion will cover:

  • The alignment of the Guam Wage and Hour law with the FLSA
  • Proper classification of employees (exempt versus non-exempt)
  • How changes to job duties may require reclassification
  • How to reconcile local and federal wage and hour laws
  • The Department of Labor’s plans for enforcement of these new guidelines
The impact of changes to the minimum wage

New business realities may mean new risks for employers.

Today’s organizations operate in a rapidly-changing environment and must be flexible.  This frequently means job duties are rearranged and reassigned.  It is now common for jobs to change significantly even without a change in job title.  When this happens it is easy to overlook the need to re-evaluate the employee’s exempt or non-exempt status under the wage and hour laws.

Do you know what the requirements are for these exemptions?

Please join us on Thursday, February 8, 2007 at the Guam Marriott Resort & Spa for an informative discussion of these important issues.  The briefing will take place from 8:00am – 10:30am.  The doors open for registration and breakfast at 7:15am.   Call 646-7803 ext. 333 for more information. The registration form can be viewed or downloaded here .
