The number of jobs recorded on the payrolls of Guam employers increased by 330 jobs in the latest quarter and 590 over the latest one year period. The payroll total increased over the year from 57,740 jobs to 58,330 according to the March 2006 preliminary figures.

Hotel employment increased by 180 jobs in the latest quarter bringing the industry total to 5,560. The cumulative increase of 480 hotel jobs over the latest year represented a 9.4 percent increase. Retail Trade employment dipped slightly from the December holiday period but remained 160 jobs above the period of one year ago. Construction employment fell modestly in the latest quarter and yearís figures. Private sector employment overall was virtually unchanged over the quarter but up over the year.

Federal and Government of Guam employment increased slightly over the quarter and year. Government of Guam autonomous agency increases this quarter are due to seasonal increases in postsecondary faculty and work study positions in March which were not reflected in the December survey period. Autonomous agency increases over the latest year were primarily in the hospital and utilities.
