Introduction to Construction Math

ABC LogoThis 15-hour course reviews basic mathematic functions, such as adding, subtracting, dividing, & multiplying whole numbers, fractions, & decimals, & explains their applications to the construction trades. Explains decimal-fraction conversions & the metric system using practical examples. Also reviews basic geometry as applied to common shapes & forms.

Introduction to Hand Tools, Power Tools & Blueprints

This 3-module course introduces hand tools that are widely used in the construction industry, such as hammers, saws, levels, pullers, vices, & clamps; explains the specific applications of each tool; and shows how to use them properly. The course also discusses important safety & maintenance issues related to hand tools. The power tool module provides detailed descriptions of commonly used power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, and sanders and reviews applications, proper use, safety, and maintenance. The blueprint module introduces basic blueprint terms, components, & symbol; explains the different types of blueprint drawings (civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing/piping, & electrical); & instructs on how to interpret & use drawing dimensions.

Roofing Applications

This 25-hour Level 2 course covers the common materials used in residential & light commercial roofing, along with the safety practices & application methods for these materials, including shingles, roll roofing, shakes, tiles, metal, & membrane roofs, as well as the selection & installation of roof vents.

HVAC

Troubleshooting Cooling & Heat Pumps

This 32˝-hour Level 3 course cover the basic techniques & equipment used in troubleshooting cooling equipment & reviews heat pump operations & heat pump control circuits, which enables the trainee to work with the instructor in the lab to isolate & correct faults in the heating, cooling, auxiliary heat, & defrost functions of heat pumps.

Commercial Airside Systems & Chimneys, Vents & Fumes

This 17˝-hour Level 2 course describes the systems, equipment, & operating sequences used in a variety of commercial airside system configurations, such as constant volume single-zone & multi-zone, VVT, VAV, & dual-duct VAV. The course also covers the principles of venting fossil fuel furnaces & the proper methods for selecting & installing vent systems for gas-fired heating equipment.

Introduction to Hydronic Systems & Air Quality Equipment

This 15-hour Level 2 course introduces hot water heating systems, focusing on safe operation of low-pressure boilers & piping systems commonly used in residential applications. The course also covers the basic principles, processes, & & devices used to control humidity & air clean lines, as well as devices sued to conserve energy in HVAC systems.

Overcurrent Protection

This 12˝-hour Level 3 course stresses the use of a variety of overcurrent protection devices, including circuit breakers & fuses, in all types of electrical systems.

Wiring: Residential

This 15-hour Level 1 course covers the electrical devices & wiring techniques common to residential construction & maintenance. Allows trainees to practice making service calculations. Stresses the appropriate NEC requirements.
