The Unemployment Situation on Guam: March 2006


The Guam Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the March
2006 unemployment rate was 6.9 percent, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the
December 2005 report of 7.0 percent. In March 2006, the number of people employed
reached 61,390, an increase of 1,760 from the latest quarter’s report. Of the total
employed, the immigrant aliens (PRA) category showed an increase of 1,590 from the
December 2005 report of 13,260 to 14,850 in March 2006. Full-time workers showed
an increase of 3,390 from the previous figure of 50,150 to 53,540.

The total number of people unemployed in March 2006 was 4,530, an increase of 30
from the previous survey in December 2005 of 4,500 unemployed. The unemployment
rate for several of the reported categories increased while others declined.

The persons not in the labor force, who were persons not employed and not actively
looking for work, numbered 38,890, a decrease of 1,960 from the previous survey of
40,850. Of the persons not in the labor force, 4,410 desired to work but did not search
for employment during the reference period for reasons presented in Table 2.
