Employment Highlights
The total number of jobs on Guam increased by nearly one thousand this quarter, in the December 2009 preliminary statistics, showing a recovery from the weak June and September 2009 figures. The total job count increased by 980 from 60,100 in September to 61,080 in December 2009. The total job count increased by 240 from one year ago in December 2008 but remained below the 61,210 figure reached in March 2009.
The private sector job count went from 44,860 in September to 45,540 in December 2009, up 680 jobs, although it remained slightly below that of one year ago in December 2008. The increases this quarter were led by Construction, up 320, Retail Trade, up 140, and Hotels up 120 jobs.
Federal employment increased by 70 jobs compared to the previous quarter but was up 60 from the prior year’s figures. Government of Guam employment increased by 230 jobs for the quarter and 370 from the comparable December period a year ago.
In the latest quarter, total private average hourly earnings were virtually unchanged but the average weekly hours paid increased from 35.6 to 36.1 causing the average weekly earnings to increase from $432.52 to $439.52.
