Labor, AHRD promote local hiring, discourage abuse, provide guidance February 8, 2006 Governor Felix P. Camacho this morning encouraged participants of the 4th Annual Labor Conference to hire from the local workforce pool and discouraged abuse of the alien labor program.
The Governor opened the conference that provides an orientation to about 80 private sector employers who have been brought into a partnership to better understand alien labor practices. The Guam Department of Labor and the Agency for Human Resources Development aims to encourage local hiring through this conference by informing employers that they need to exhaust every avenue to hire on-island before seeking foreign labor. GDOL and AHRD officials also strongly discouraged abusing alien labor programs and helped employers to guard against abuses that weaken their businesses. “ I really appreciate the work of our Labor and AHRD employees as we aim to encourage local hiring, discourage abuse and give you the information you need to protect your companies,” Governor Camacho told conference participants. Administrators and employees from AHRD and GDOL’s Alien Labor Processing Division (ALPD), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Wage and Hour Division and Worker’s Compensation Division are helping employers understand regulatory requirements of federal and local law to ensure proper working conditions for employees. “I want to thank you for your commitment to providing your employees the proper working conditions that they need to help your companies grow,” Governor Camacho continued.
